About Us
SGR Gritting is a SafeContractor approved, local winter maintenance business providing a high-quality gritting and snow clearance service across Sussex, Surrey and Kent. At SGR Gritting, we pride ourselves on the personal, friendly and professional services we provide, whilst working to the highest health and safety standards. Our reputation is our highest priority, so we work closely with our customers to build a tailored programme to ensure complete satisfaction of our service. In partnership with Nurture gritting we work tirelessly during the winter months to operate a 24/7 service, operating outside of working hours to minimise business disruption.
So why do you need to grit?
You may be familiar with the management of health & safety at work regulations 1999 and (regulation 12) Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations, that any occupier of a commercial property is required to assess risks and implement measures to protect employees and customers from the hazard that icy conditions present. Failing to do so may result in prosecution. For any business, ice and snow could pose a real and costly danger. We can help remove this risk with our winter gritting and snow clearance service, providing a rapid response to deteriorating weather conditions.

Our gritting services

-
With our emphasis on ‘local’ service, we believe that our gritting services are second to none, focusing on a specific regional service.
-
Live tracking capabilities and real time data for accountability and evidence.
-
A full range of modern machinery including hand gritters, 4x4 trucks and 3.5ton vans so every site is covered whether small or large.
-
We exclusively use white rock salt conforming to the BS3247:2011 British standard for de-icing salt. Our salt does not leave behind the same messy residue as traditional brown rock salt, making it perfect for pathways, pavements, playgrounds and commercial estates where cleanliness is of upmost importance.
-
By utilising the MET Office’s daily forecast, we can provide the correct service at the correct time.
-
Being a small, local business, we don’t rely on sub-contractors. This ensures all operatives are fully compliant in our operating expectations and company values, keeping work standards high.

Our practises
Our snow clearance services

-
Snow clearance is a critical part of any winter maintenance programme and is often overlooked.
-
We have an extensive range of snow clearing equipment including tractors, telehandlers and 4x4 ploughs.
-
If you have tricky areas on your site, we can send a dedicated team of path and step clearing crews, using hand tools to clear the snow.

Initial consultation
We initially carry out a site inspection, where we will compile a risk assessment and method statement including a site map, highlighting all the areas that require gritting.
When do we decide when to grit?
During the initial consultation, we decide on a trigger temperature, normally 0 degrees and then monitor the weather using our range of forecasting sources. If the temperature in your area is forecast to hit the trigger temperature, we will notify you in the morning that we intend to carry out our gritting service that evening. If for any reason you do not want us to grit the site that evening, you can let us know and we will cancel the job. One thing to note is that road temperatures can be significantly cooler than air temperatures.

When do we carry out gritting operations?
Ordinarily, we carry out gritting services between 17:30 – 06:00 to minimise business disruption. Customers are welcome to specify times that they would prefer us to be on site. On the occasions that snow is forecast, we may come in during the day, as gritting before snowfall is imperative to maximise the efficiency of the salt. Again, we have a close relationship with our clients, so constant communication enables smooth operations and total satisfaction.

How much salt do we use?
We use the industry standard 20g/m2 of salt during operations, unless a customer wants an increased amount, or we are battling snow.
Being a small, local business, we don’t rely on sub-contractors. This ensures all operatives are fully compliant in our operating expectations and company values, keeping work standards high.
